Electric
vehicles, or EVs, are charged through an existing
electric power source, at an estimated cost of $1 per
day. There are currently available many support vehicles
and a growing number of light-duty and heavy-duty
on-road vehicles. Cost for small support vehicles range
from $4,000 - $9,000. Dedicated on-road average $30,000.
Unfortunately, there is a limited operational area for
dedicated EV and down time for recharging, but
maintenance costs are low.
Recommended uses:
- Utility fleets
- Bus fleets
- Security patrols
- Airports
- Zoos
Fuel cells are a developing
technology in which electricity is generated by an
electrochemical reaction. Research is being conducted
through a cooperative effort between the U.S. Department
of Energy and USCAR (DaimlerChrysler, Ford and General
Motors).
