Lexington-Fayette Urban County
Government purchased its first hybrid vehicle in 2001 (Honda Insight).
This municipality now has the largest hybrid fleet in Kentucky with 52
hybrids (Toyota Prius & Honda Insights).

Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant
Over $2.7 billion in formula grants is available to U.S. states,
territories, local governments, and Indian tribes under the Energy
Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program, funded for
the first time under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of
2009. Lexington is eligible to receive $2,753,800 in direct formula
grants from the federal Department of Energy (DOE) through this
program.
At the request of the Mayor’s Commission on the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act, the LFUCG Department of Environmental Quality
developed
Lexington’s proposed Energy Efficiency and Conservation Strategy with
input from the Commission and other LFUCG departments. The Strategy
was approved by this Commission on June 18, 2009 for submittal to DOE.
The Strategy and application were subsequently submitted to DOE on
June 19, 2009.
Lexington-Fayette County's
proposed Strategy focuses on improving energy efficiency of city-owned
buildings under our Lead by Example initiative and reducing
energy usage in our community under the banner of Empower
Lexington. Lexington’s current Strategy, comprised of 8 projects,
is multifaceted and will make Lexington a more sustainable community
by reducing energy usage, creating and maintaining jobs, and lowering
our carbon footprint.
Lead by Example projects include employing energy management
technology and retrofitting LFUCG buildings so that they are more
energy efficient. Empower Lexington projects include
community energy education, increased use of LED exit signage,
upgrading traffic signal software to reduce vehicle stops and delays,
a community bike program, a recycling efficiency program, and green
roofs education.
Please note two
additional projects proposed in our original application, an urban
ecosystem analysis and a community garden project, were subsequently
removed from our application at the request of DOE in September. DOE
determined these activities were not eligible activities during their
review process. A revised application (without these two projects)
was submitted to DOE on September 3, 2009 and we are currently
awaiting approval.

specific project in the table below. To view Lexington’s current

Governor Beshear announces Clean Diesel funding for Lexington-Fayette
Urban County Government
Lexington Biodiesel Initiative Gaining Momentum
The Lexington Fayette Urban
County Government fleet switched to Biodiesel at the Town Branch
treatment plant in October 2006. Fayette County Schools and LexTran
followed suit.
UK has utilized Biodiesel
for over a year. Under the new iniative, UK requested contractors
working on campus to utilize Biodiesel in their equipment. Turner
Construction Co. reported ideal performance using a B10 blend. Riley
Oil began offering a B10 Biodiesel blend at one of their locations (on
Leestown Road) and later added a site on Winchester Road.
Expanded refueling in 2007
was made possible in part by a CMAQ (Congestion Mitigation & Air
Quality) grant. The additional refueling enables Fayette County
Schools, LFUCG and the University of Kentucky (UK) access to Biodiesel
in more strategic locations.
LexTran will incorporate Biodiesel at
their new fueling station to be complete in early 2008.
