Transit
Authority of River City (TARC)
The Transit Authority of River
City's Mission is to explore and implement
transportation opportunities that enhance the social, economic and
environmental
well being of the greater Louisville Community.
TRANSIT AUTHORITY OF RIVER CITY
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY STATEMENT
The Transit Authority of River
City (TARC) recognizes the crucial role it has to play in improving
Louisville's environmental quality of life. In keeping with its
mission, TARC will explore any opportunity to enhance the
environmental well being of the Greater Louisville community.
Each member of the TARC team is empowered and encouraged to be an
environmental steward through the use of the following principles:
- Communicate: Take
every opportunity to educate the public on the benefits of transit
and how riding TARC reduces pollution. Share knowledge with each
other and our partners about how our work may impact the environment
and how each of us can contribute to achieving our environmental
goals.
- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle:
Look for ways to reduce our consumption of resources (fuel,
electricity, water and time, e.g.), to reduce waste, to reuse
materials and to recycle. Show a preference for products that reuse
resources or are made from recycled materials.
- Comply: Strive to
exceed the environmental standards set by Federal, State and local
environmental regulatory bodies by continually improving our
environmental management system and regularly reviewing our
environmental objectives and targets.
Every member of the TARC team
has the right and the responsibility to assist with the implementation
and maintenance of this policy.

TARC Adds Nine Hybrid Buses with
New Butterfly Design
(July 2010) – TARC’s fleet of
environmentally-friendly buses increased to 21 with the arrival of
nine new Gillig hybrid-electric buses in mid July. Seven of them were
funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA)
and two from a variety of federal and state sources. The hybrids are
silver with a new butterfly design that complements the silver bus
design that was introduced last year.

TARC Adds Hybrid Electric
Buses to Its Fleet
6.5.09
-Transit Authority of River City took delivery of three additional
hybrid electric transit buses last week to bring their hybrid fleet
number to 12 operating in Louisville. "These vehicles have proven to
be an excellent investment. They get better fuel economy, reduce
pollution-causing emissions, require little maintenance and provide
a quieter and smoother ride for TARC’s customers," said Barry
Barker, Ex Dir of TARC. An additional ten hybrid buses have been
requested under the economic stimulus requests sent to Washington.
If awarded, the fleet will total 22 hybrid electrics!
TARC Adds More Hybrid Buses in Louisville
In June 2007, TARC added four additional hybrid buses
to its existing fleet of five. U.S. Congressman John Yarmuth joined
Louisville-Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson and TARC executive director
Barry Barker for the official dedication, July 13, 2007.
The new buses look very much like those placed in
service in October 2004. They have the same familiar red butterfly on
the blue sky background. The prominent white hump on top of the bus
(the cowling that protects the nickel-metal hydride batteries and
inverter module) is just the same. A sharp eye will notice that the
new buses look sleeker. That’s because TARC elected to install
flush-mounted, bonded windows on these buses. It gives them more of a
streamlined appearance.
The buses were purchased thanks to a direct appropriation from U.S.
Senator Bunning, and an award of Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality
(CMAQ) funds from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
