President Bill Jacob Receives UPS Lifetime
Achievement Award
Bill Jacob was recently nominated for the Ground
Support Worldwide Leader of the Year Award. He has
won that award and in March, he will be honored with
the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Cygnus
Aviation Expo. This award is presented to a person
who has demonstrated tremendous commitment to the
industry through numerous years of dedicated
service.
Bill's Bio
Bill Jacob’s 40 years in the transportation industry
began in 1972 when he left the U.S. Navy, where he
worked in electronics, to follow in his father’s
footsteps at Eastern Airlines.
Bill spent 15 years with Eastern, beginning at New
York’s JFK International Airport as a mechanic then
moving to Miami to join the airline’s training
department. From there, he traveled across the
country to train the airline’s mechanics on jet
ways, air starts, GPUs and all other types of Ground
Support Equipment.
Bill left Eastern Airlines in 1987 to join UPS as a
mechanic in the GSE shop as the company started its
own airline. Due to his vast experience, it did not
take long for him to advance and just three months
later, Bill was promoted to management and spent the
next few years building experience and taking on
more responsibilities.
His many roles with UPS Airlines began with a short
time in supervision before transferring to the
airline office as a GSE zone manager (coordinator of
maintenance for GSE) for UPS internationally. Bill
was then assigned as engineering manager and
training manager, developing most of the training
methods and materials that are still used today to
train the company’s supervisors and mechanics
throughout the world.
In 2000, Bill was assigned to the UPS Automotive
department responsible for the state of Connecticut,
which has a large UPS gateway at Bradley
International Airport. In 2004, he was promoted to
his current position as vice president of the Air
Group Ground Support Equipment for one of the
world’s largest airlines. In Bill’s role, he
oversees the maintenance, engineering and
acquisition of ground support equipment, as well as
environmental compliance for every UPS gateway –
domestic and international.
Bill is certified by the National Institute for
Automotive Service Excellence and is a member of the
Society of Automotive Engineers. He also serves on
the boards of the Kentucky Clean Fuels Coalition,
Wesley Manor Retirement Community and the Louisville
Air Pollution Control District.
